Barrio Escalante, San José. Costa Rica (proposed location)
This proposal is Architect Fernando Gurdián Arango's graduate thesis project.
The project put forward addresses several scales at the city level: macro, meso, and micro. At the macro scale, the project establishes an urban cultivation matrix; at the meso scale, a central intervention within that matrix — the Cultivation Center, the nucleus of the system, the physical place that originates knowledge, translates it, systematizes it, and feeds it back. Finally, at the micro scale, the project establishes a system of thought — a motivational reach. For the purposes of the project presented here, we focus on the meso scale: the Urban Cultivation Center.
As mentioned, the Cultivation Center is conceptually the main organ of the matrix. It is an architectural design proposal that projects demonstrative spaces for integrated, active permaculture systems. Here, citizens practice and gain access to knowledge related to permaculture. At the same time, it is understood as an organ of the matrix — its behavior akin to a symbiotic relationship of resource and information exchange.
